Harris and Obama’s relationship goes back more than a decade. As noted by The New Yorker, she was one of the first elected officials in California to endorse his presidential run. Harris has often drawn comparisons to the former president, as both are biracial, but Harris has rejected being called “the female Obama.” “Listen, I was the elected district attorney of San Francisco, I was the elected attorney general of the state of California — twice elected to both positions,” she told The Atlantic in 2019. “And now I’m a United States senator, and only the second Black woman elected to the United States Senate. “I think I’ve earned my own legacy.”

Obama cited Harris’ successful political career, saying that it is proof that she will make a great VP. “I’ve known Senator @KamalaHarris for a long time,” he wrote. “She is more than prepared for the job. She’s spent her career defending our Constitution and fighting for folks who need a fair shake.”
